The next exhibit at the Dutchess Community College Mildred I. Washington Art Gallery will feature an eclectic selection of pieces by Monica d. Church, the associate director of the James W. Palmer '90 Gallery at Vassar College and a former technical assistant and art instructor at both Vassar and DCC. Her work has been shown throughout the northeast and across the country.

The Dutchess Community College Masquers' Guild will bring Neil Simon's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" to the stage from March 1-4. Performances will begin at 8 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday in the James and Betty Hall Theatre in Dutchess Hall on DCC's Poughkeepsie campus.

Award-winning illustrator and author James Ransome will come to Dutchess Community College on Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. for an artist's reception and book signing to celebrate his current exhibit of work, on display through Feb. 29 in DCC's Francis U. and Mary F. Ritz library. The reception is free and open to the public.

Dutchess Community College is proud to announce the addition of a second Associate in Science degree program in the field of Aviation Science -- Aviation Management -- for students wishing to work in the aviation industry. The College also offers a Pilot program.

The Dutchess Community College Office of Community Services has openings in two upcoming technology centered non-credit courses - LED Lighting Tutorial and Introduction to Revit.

Dutchess Community College's SmartStart program has earned two awards from a national organization of student-affairs professionals. SmartStart is a four-week summer program of classes in mathematics, reading, writing and study skills for incoming freshmen who are academically underprepared in several essential skills areas.

In an effort to encourage young women to explore career opportunities in historically male-dominated fields, Dutchess Community College will host its 16th Annual "Math and Science Matter ... Especially for Young Women" program on Saturday, March 3. The program runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to girls in grades 5-8. Registration is $10.

A gospel concert, Kwanzaa celebration and Freedom Riders event are just a few of the activities Dutchess Community College is offering to celebrate Black History Month. All activities will be held at DCC's Poughkeepsie campus and are free and open to the public.

Approximately 180 Dutchess Community College business and community leaders, donors and friends gathered Jan. 5 for the 19th Annual President's Breakfast held on the College's Poughkeepsie campus. The keynote address was given by Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro, a graduate of DCC's Class of 2001.

Dutchess Community College will host a screening of the documentary film "Our School," which focuses on the struggle of three minority children to desegregate their Romanian school. It will take place Jan. 10 from 2-4 p.m. in room 122 of Bowne Hall, on DCC's Poughkeepsie campus. It is free and open to the public, and will include a discussion with film director and producer Mona Nicoara.

A New York State Sheriff's Association Institute Criminal Justice Scholarship has been awarded to Dutchess Community College student and Pleasant Valley resident Jesse Fuerst. The $250 award is presented annually to a full-time Criminal Justice major from each community college in New York state. Candidates for the scholarship must excel academically as well as demonstrate financial need.

The 40th Semi-Annual Communications & Media Arts Program Audio & Video Student Festival will be held Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre at Dutchess Community College.

A record-breaking 150 middle and high school students participated in the 18th annual Magnetic Levitation (MAGLEV) competition sponsored by Dutchess Community College's Department of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Technologies on Nov. 18. Participating schools included Linden Avenue Middle School, Webutuck Middle School, Union Vale Middle School, George Fischer Middle School, Todd Middle School and Red Hook High School.

Dr. James Waller, professor and Cohen Chair of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College in New Hampshire, will come to Dutchess Community College on Thursday, Dec. 8 to discuss "Becoming Evil: How Ordinary People Commit Genocide and Mass Killing." The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre, and is free and open to the public.

The Dutchess Community College Masquers' Guild performance troupe will present the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Musical Revue on Dec. 2 and 3 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on DCC's main campus in Poughkeepsie.

The Dutchess Community College Foundation will host its 40th Annual Craft Fair on Thanksgiving weekend, November 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day on the DCC main campus in Poughkeepsie.

A recent collaboration between Dutchess Community College and Nubian Directions II, Inc., lead agency for the Beacon Community Resource Center (formerly the Beacon Community Center) has given local residents another convenient way to access DCC’s English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED classes.

Thirty-nine Dutchess Community College freshmen were formally awarded the 2011 Charles E. and Mabel E. Conklin Scholarship for Academic Excellence recently, joining family members and Mr. and Mrs. Conklin for a luncheon on campus. When combined with the Conklin scholars who began at DCC last fall, approximately 80 students currently are benefiting from the initiative.

Joseph A. McCartin, professor of history at Georgetown University and labor union expert, will give a presentation at Dutchess Community College called “The Enduring Legacy of the PATCO Strike: Labor, Politics and the Public Sector Thirty Years After Reagan.” The talk will be held Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on DCC’s Poughkeepsie campus. It is free and open to the public.

Pianist Jeffrey Brown, a faculty member of the Music School at DCC, will play on Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on DCC’s Poughkeepsie campus. He will perform pieces by Chopin, Bach and Beethoven. The show is open to the public, with optional donations to the MusicLink Scholarship Fund accepted at the door.

The Ninth Annual Black College Fair sponsored by Dutchess Community College will be held Thursday, Sept. 22 from 3-7 p.m. at Poughkeepsie High School.

Johanna Miller, assistant advocacy director and public policy counsel of the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), will give a lecture at Dutchess Community College on Sept. 16 titled “Criminalizing the Classroom.” The presentation, held to mark Constitution Day, will be held at noon in the James and Betty Hall Theatre. It is free and open to the public.

The Music School at DCC will host Music Exploration Saturday on Sept. 3 from 1-3 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on the College’s Poughkeepsie campus. The free event is an opportunity for children and adults to sample instruments, audition for ensembles and enjoy a concert featuring Music School faculty members.

College Connection, the Dutchess Community College concurrent enrollment program that enables high school students to take college courses while simultaneously completing high school requirements, recently received accreditation from the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP). DCC’s program is the only one in the region – and one of just 66 nationwide – to earn this coveted accreditation.

The annual Sing-a-Thon/Play-a-Thon hosted by the Music School at Dutchess Community College will be held on July 30 from 2-5 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on the main DCC campus in Poughkeepsie. The event – at which DCC students, faculty and community members perform - benefits the MusicLink Scholarship Fund, which provides free or low-cost music lessons to students who could otherwise not afford them. Attendance is free, but donations to MusicLink will be gladly accepted at the door. Additionally, the performers have requested sponsors for their efforts, with proceeds going to MusicLink.

Dutchess Community College and more than 200 guests gathered today to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in the College’s history - the groundbreaking for on-campus student housing. Scheduled to open for the fall 2012 semester, the 465-bed residence hall will enable students who wish to live away at college to do so, while benefitting from the quality, accessibility and affordability of a DCC education.

Dutchess Community College celebrated its 52nd Commencement May 19, graduating the most students in its history. Associate degrees and career certificates in 54 programs of study were conferred on 1,201 graduates, who range in age from 18 to almost 67. The graduation ceremony was held in Falcon Hall on DCC’s main campus; more than 4,000 were in attendance, with many guests viewing the festivities at several simulcast sites throughout campus.

The first ever Eli Jaffe Film Competition will culminate May 15 at 1 p.m. at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck with a screening of the five projects that have been selected as finalists prior to the announcement of the winner. Film and video students at the five regional colleges were invited to submit projects that addressed public issues. Both narrative and documentary projects were reviewed by a team of judges including local filmmaker Lisa Krueger, screenwriter and Marist faculty member Josh Robbins and Upstate Films Assistant Director Becca Prahl.

The Music School at Dutchess Community College will offer Kindermusik and Chamber-Music programs at the North East Community Center in Millerton this summer.

Eight DCC students were invited to Albany recently to receive honors from SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher. Five students received the 2011 State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, while three were presented awards from Phi Theta Kappa.

Families looking for a fun, free weekend event that has something to offer every age group are invited to Dutchess Community Day. Sponsored by the Student Government Association at Dutchess Community College, the event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 in the Washington Quad next to the College’s Cottage Road entrance.

Dutchess Community College’s History, Government and Economics Department is teaming with the Institute of History, Archaeology and Education to offer the Dutchess County History Conference on May 7. Sessions will be led by local historians and DCC faculty, and are free and open to the public.

Dr. Timothy Snyder, Yale University professor and Marshall Scholar, will come to DCC on April 28 at 7 p.m. to present “Holocaust History: An Agenda for Renewal.” The lecture will be held in the James and Betty Hall Theatre in Dutchess Hall on DCC’s Poughkeepsie campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The Dutchess Community College Foundation’s annual Gala - Community’s Bridge to the Future - was held on Saturday, March 26 at the Grandview in Poughkeepsie. The event drew more than 300 guests to honor two outstanding individuals and raise more than $110,000 for student scholarships.

The exhibit currently featured at DCC’s Mildred I. Washington Art Gallery is called “Place,” a collection of paintings, sculptures and installations by Caroline Kent, Shona Macdonald and Emily Puthoff. The three artists have teamed up for the exhibit as part of DCC’s celebration of Women’s History Month. The exhibit will run through April 15.

Actress Amber Tamblyn, best known for her role as the title character on the television show “Joan of Arcadia” and appearances on “House,” will come to Dutchess Community College on March 31 at 12:30 p.m. to read from her two published books of poetry.

Jonathan Alter, renowned television commentator, award-winning columnist and senior editor of Newsweek, will give a lecture at DCC on March 30 at 7 p.m. The presentation will be held in the James and Betty Hall Theatre in Dutchess Hall on DCC’s Poughkeepsie campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Dutchess Community College will hold an information night for high school juniors who are interested in earning college credit during their senior year. By attending DCC simultaneously with high school, students can get a low-cost jump start on college. This Early Admissions/Bridge Program provides an opportunity for seniors to attend DCC either full- or part-time.

The Dutchess Community College annual celebration of Women’s History Month will begin with a musical performance, and continue through March with Lyceum speakers, an art exhibit, a poetry reading and more. Among the highlights will be poetry readings by Amber Tamblyn who played the title character in “Joan of Arcadia.”

Recognizing that it can be difficult for students with disabilities to make the move from high school to college, Dutchess Community College has joined with others to put together a program to help ease the transition. The free program will be held March 15 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. (The snow date is March 18.)

The Dutchess Community College Masquer’s Guild will stage “Nothing Serious,” a series of 10 short relationship-themed vignettes by Rich Orloff, between March 3 and March 6. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 8 p.m. and the Sunday performance will start at 2 p.m.

High school students with an interest in architecture will have the opportunity to spend a day working with experts in the field at the Sixth Annual Dutchess Community College Day of Design on Feb. 5. Local students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades will work with professional architects on a design project. By the end of the day, the students will have developed a concept board and architectural model.

“Invisible Children” is a documentary film about the Ugandan civil war, and the practice of abducting children and using them as soldiers. Dutchess Community College will host a screening of the film and a discussion Nov. 11 at 12:30 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on DCC’s Poughkeepsie campus.

A one-week timeshare ownership of a villa on the Caribbean coast in Puerto Rico is just one of the items on the block at the Dutchess Community College Foundation’s annual Festifall benefit auction to be held Nov. 12 at the Poughkeepsie Tennis Club at 6 p.m.

Dutchess Community College’s Wappingers Falls site has scheduled two Saturday academic advisement sessions to give prospective and current students who live or work in southern Dutchess County convenient opportunities to explore how their educational and career goals can be achieved through DCC.

Thomas Cobb, author of the book “Crazy Heart,” will come to Dutchess Community College on Nov. 4 to lecture on his novel, and its adaptation into the 2009 Oscar-winning film. The Lyceum presentation will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on DCC’s Poughkeepsie campus. The presentation is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a book signing.

Kenyan journalist and award-winning author Binyavanga Wainaina will come to Dutchess Community College on Nov. 9 for presentations at 12:30 and 7 p.m., both in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on DCC’s Poughkeepsie campus. The lectures are free and open to the public.

Richard Keller-Coffey, deputy supervisor of the Town of Poughkeepsie and former Dutchess County legislator in 2008 and 2009, was sworn in Sept. 28 as the newest trustee on the Dutchess Community College board.

Dutchess Community College set an enrollment record this fall, with more than 10,000 students taking courses totaling more than 100,000 credit hours. Full-time students outnumber part-time students this semester, continuing a trend and setting a record for both full-time and overall enrollment.

Dutchess Community College’s Mildred I. Washington Art Gallery just launched an exhibit featuring artwork created by DCC students in the spring and summer 2010 semesters. The exhibit will continue through Oct. 1 and is free and open to the public. It features photography, drawings, ceramics, graphics, paintings and more. The Dutchess Community College Office of Community Services and the Clean Energy Technology Training Consortium are teaming up to offer a free information session on careers available in green technologies, and the training needed to get jobs in the emerging field. On January 14, Dutchess Community College will host Dr. Rebecca Edwards, the Eloise Ellery Professor of History at Vassar College, for a lecture titled “The Lost Decade of the 1880s in American Politics.”

Dutchess Community College’s website, which was redesigned and unveiled in January, was recently honored with the Gold Medallion Award from District 1 of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR).

The next exhibit in Dutchess Community College’s Mildred I. Washington Art Gallery will feature the work of graphic artist Woody Pirtle.

Dutchess Community College’s Fall 2009 enrollment is 9,791, up more than 14% from last year.

On October 27, Dutchess Community College hosted a ceremony dedicating the College’s archives in honor of Dr. Jerry A. Lee, DCC’s third president who served from 1982 to 1992.

The Board of Trustees of Dutchess Community College will hold a workshop session on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 beginning at 5:30 p.m.  The session will be held in the Bowne Hall board room on the main DCC campus. The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees previously scheduled for 7 p.m. has been canceled. 

Modern Dance Company to Visit DCC for Lyceum Program

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Linda Diamond & Company, an award-winning professional dance group, is coming to Dutchess Community College on October 15 at 12:30 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on DCC’s main Poughkeepsie campus.

The group’s performances feature a multi-cultural dance repertoire combined with different visual themes to produce a show that appeals to all ages. A section from the award-winning DanceVisions of Picasso will be incorporated into the DCC performance.

Choreographer Linda Diamond has received several Dutchess County Arts Council Awards for her Woodstock Diamond Dance Festival projects.

The show is part of the College’s Lyceum series, and is free and open to the public.

The United States auto industry will be the focus of a lecture by Paul Ingrassia, a 31-year veteran of The Wall Street Journal. Mr. Ingrassia won a Pulitzer Prize in 1993 as the Journal's Detroit bureau chief for coverage of the prior year's crisis at General Motors.

Twin brothers David and Jonathan Bisson graduated first and second, respectively, in the 2009 graduating class of Pine Plains High School, and both have chosen to take advantage of the Charles E. and Mabel E. Conklin Scholarship for Academic Excellence offered by Dutchess Community College for students who have graduated in the top 10% of their high school class.
